I appreciate your effort to suggest hon...Hi Teklu;

I appreciate your effort to suggest honest ideas for the steps to be taken for future Ethiopia, based on the analysis of existing and anticipated scenarios. You deserve credit for this noble effort. In a time where many scholars are terrified to speak out (for fear of social media bullying), your courage is commendable.

However, I instead of being informed and relieved, I have bogged down in a morass of inquiries and uncertainties. I really doubt if your preferred scenario (i.e., to let every individual join his/her ethnic group and anticipate a multi ethnic based national government setup) is as rosy as you painted it.

Primarily, your assessment is focused on few and bigger ethnic groups (Amhara, Oromo, Tigrai, ...) as if they were cleanly demarcated from one another. I'm wondering if you have prescribed such formula to be applied in over 80 ethnic groups of the country. Secondly, I wonder how people residing in other ethnic regions are factored. For instance, over 6 million Amharas resides outside of Amhara region. Are they doomed to return to the land of their ancestries (most of whom don't even have any inkling of the region) ... or…. doomed to remain voiceless and treated “foreign” in "other ethnic regions"? Thirdly, what about people of mixed heritage? Fourthly, are you suggesting people like Dr. Berhanu to initially go back to Gurage zone before the national building? The last, but the most important, is have you imagined that the country will cheerfully embrace a complete balkanization (and God knows when) before the groups stitch themselves to a miraculous country. Don't you think group (ethnic) leaders would amass a huge ego and temptation to remain the leader of a "country" irrespective of resource and relevance? I'm sure you have witnessed the mushrooming of political parties, church denominations - not because there is fundamental difference. It is because it brings several power mongers to the drivers’ seat, which is not possible if it is united. In my opinion, it is risky business. There is Amharic saying: door masaded kamareh, dorohi'n be kok keyirat.

Daniel
Los AngelesAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
